Two men posed as police to try to get into woman's home

Two men who posed as police officers to gain entry into a woman's home while wearing fake uniforms are being hunted.

The men - wearing caps, harnesses and carrying batons - told the female resident they were there to search the property in east London.

But the female resident became concerned and asked to see their identification.

Unable to produce identification cards, the suspects left the address in Barking.

Real police officers were called at 6.51pm on Tuesday [October 12] to the residential block. The men were followed and fled in the direction of Abbey Road.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Officers attended and conducted an area search, but the males could not be located.

"It is not believed that anything was stolen from the address and there were no reports of any physical injuries.

"An investigation is ongoing. "There have been no arrests at this time."

Members of the public have reacted to a video of the incident posted on social media.

One said: "I bet a lot of people would just let a stranger into their home if they had a police uniform on."

Another said: "This could’ve ended badly for a vulnerable person. Keep vigilant especially for older members of your community."
