Two 27yo men killed as car crashes off ramp into Melbourne dam

The car was pulled from the water but the driver and passenger could not be saved.

Two men have died after their car crashed off the side of an elevated freeway ramp and landed in a dam in Melbourne's west.

Police said the men, from Sunshine and Hoppers Crossing, were discovered inside the car when it was pulled from the water.

Both were aged 27, police said.

The car veered off the Western Ring Road ramp at the Geelong exit in Altona North about 8:45pm.

Leading Senior Constable Evan Brown said the car — a Mercedes-Benz GLA180 — may have been speeding, but it was too early to say.

"It's failed to negotiate the on-ramp to the Princes Freeway to Geelong and driven down an embankment, where it's rolled into a dam and has landed upside down in the water," he said.

"Police and emergency services attended and attempted to retrieve the occupants inside but were unsuccessful.

"It's very early days in the investigation but it appears speed has been a factor."

The men have not been publicly identified.
