Two men jailed following £27k drugs deal on Lanarkshire streets

Two men have been jailed after drugs worth £27,000 changed hands in a Hamilton street.

Police officers witnessed the handover and one of the men fled the scene in a Range Rover, but he was caught after a high speed chase.

Michael McCabe, 39, of Roseberry Place, Hamilton, and Christopher Barrry, 33, of Prospecthill Crescent, Glasgow, were each jailed for a year at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

They admitted being concerned in the supply of amphetamine - commonly known as speed - an offence aggravated by a connection to serious organised crime.

Barry also admitted driving dangerously.

Police were carrying out surveillance in Seaton Terrace on October 23, 2020, when the Range Rover arrived.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, told the court: "McCabe approached the vehicle, opened the boot and removed two heavy-weighted bin bags.

"The driver, Barry, got out and spoke to McCabe before closing the boot and returning to the driver's seat.

"Several police officers pursued McCabe on foot, detained him and seized the bags.

"Other officers drew up alongside the Range Rover, but Barry drove off at speed, across the pavement and on to a grass area.

"Officers followed him for about 10 minutes. They watched him undertake other vehicles repeatedly at speed, drive through numerous red lights and travel the wrong way on roundabouts.

"All the while he narrowly missed other vehicles and pedestrians.

"He eventually drove into a dead end in East Kilbride and was arrested."

The amphetamine seized weighed 17 kilos and was worth between £17,000 and £27,000.

Lawyers for the pair said they got involved only because they were in debt to drug dealers.

Jackson Bateman, representing McCabe, said: "There are gaps in his record and there is a lack of offences of this type.

"I submit there is a credible alternative to custody here."

However, Sheriff Colin Dunipace told the accused: "It's a serious matter and, having regard to the amount of drugs and your records, I'm satisfied the custodial threshold has been crossed."

Barry was also banned from driving for 18 months.
