Two men have been flown to hospital in a reportedly serious condition after a truck carrying race horses through the Hunter region left the road and collided with a tree at Jerrys Plains early Saturday morning.
Paramedics arrived on the scene just south of Muswellbrook and treated one man for spinal and pelvis pain, and another, who had become trapped in the cabin for a short time before he was freed.
A spokesperson for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter services said both men were stabilised at the scene by paramedics and the chopper's critical care medical team, before they were flown to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.
NSW Police said a number of horses had died as a result of the crash, which occurred around 6.30am.
The Golden Highway was closed for several hours in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the way. Diversions were put in place via Denman Road before the highway re-opened around 11.40am.
