Two men in their 60s held at gunpoint after 'firearm found in carrier bag'

A firearm was found in a carrier bag after armed police arrested two men in their 60s.

Police were called out to Shevington's Lane in the Fairhaven area of Kirkby at around 9.20am today (Sunday) following reports of suspicious activity.

A witness told the ECHO that two men were told to "lie down" by armed police after a carrier bag was "thrown" behind a telephone box.

Video footage showed armed police recovering a carrier bag from the scene.

Police have now confirmed that two men, both in their 60s, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

A spokesman said that a carrier bag containing what is thought to be a firearm was recovered. The gun will now be forensically tested by the force.

A spokesman said : "We were contacted at 9.20am today, Sunday 27 June, following reports of two men acting suspiciously in Fairhaven in Kirkby.

"Officers attended and two men, both in their 60s, were detained at 9.40am on Shevington’s Lane in Kirkby and arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"A carrier bag was also recovered nearby which was believed to have contained a firearm. It has been recovered for forensic examination.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Both men are in custody."
