Two men aged 19 and 28 have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence after the tipper truck crash in Bath which killed four people, Avon and Somerset police said.
The crash killed three adults and a four-year-old girl when the truck careered out of control on a hill in the village of Weston last week.
The 32-tonne truck ploughed into Mitzi Rosanna Steady, four, who was walking with her grandmother, Margaret Rogers, on a steep and narrow hill on the outskirts of Bath. Mitzi died instantly.
The truck overturned on a Volvo at the bottom of the hill, also killing executives Phillip Allen, 52, and Robert Parker, 59, and their driver, Stephen Vaughan, 34.
Avon and Somerset police said: “We have this morning arrested two men following the death of four people in Bath last week.
“It follows the incident in Lansdown Lane on Monday evening (9 February) when a tipper truck carrying aggregate was in collision with a number of vehicles and two pedestrians.
“A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and manslaughter by gross negligence.
“A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing manslaughter by gross negligence.”
A memorial service was held at All Saints church in Bath on Sunday to remember those who died.
Rector Patrick Whitworth, from All Saints church, said: “There’s a lot of tenderness around in the community and that comes as a result of the tragedy.”
Neighbours and friends expressed their shock in a book of condolence at Weston library. Resident Lorraine Evans wrote that she had witnessed the tragedy with her son and father.
“All I can see is that lorry coming towards us and I’m so thankful to be here now,” she wrote. “But I carry so much guilt and sadness for the lives lost! I wish there was something I could do or say to take your pain away.”
