Elderly man drowns at NSW Hunter region beach

An elderly man has died after being found unresponsive in the water at a beach in the NSW Hunter region.

Paramedics gave CPR to the man at Fingal Beach near Port Stephens after 10am on Sunday, however he was not able to be revived.

The man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be in his 70s.

Police are investigating the drowning and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
