Two men die in M1 crash after driver 'believed to have lost control'

Two young men were killed in a crash on the M1 near north Nottinghamshire.

The motorway was closed between junctions 30 and 31, near Worksop, following the serious crash which happened at around 8pm on Easter Sunday.

A white Volkswagen Golf had been driving along the northbound carriageway when it is believed the driver lost control.

The vehicle left the road and crashed into the barrier and a number of trees before coming to a stop on its roof.

South Yorkshire Police said two men, age 20 and 22, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson said: "Our Serious Collisions Unit is appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after two men were killed in a collision on the M1 on Sunday evening (4 April).

"At 7.29pm, a white Volkswagen Golf was travelling northbound on the M1 between Junction 30 and 31.

"The driver of the Golf is believed to have lost control, causing the car to leave the carriageway and collide with the barrier and several trees before coming to rest on its roof. Two men from Sheffield, aged 22 and 20, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved."

"Both families have now been informed and are being supported by trained officers.

"We are asking any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who witnessed the Golf prior, to get in touch. We are especially keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage which captured the Golf travelling along the M1 between 7pm and 7.29pm.

"If you can help, please contact 101 quoting incident number 873 of 4 April. Any footage can be emailed through to enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk with the incident number listed in the subject line."

No other vehicles were thought to have been involved.
