POLICE are investigating after the death of two men from gunshot wounds in Kotara South on Saturday.
A crime scene has been established at a house on Blackbutt Parade.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 5pm, following reports of a man armed with a firearm.
On arrival officers located the body of a man outside the home suffering a gunshot wound.
Further inquiries led police inside the home where they discovered the body of a second man, also suffering a gunshot wound.
Both men are believed to be aged in their early forties.
While the investigation is continuing, it's understood that police are not looking for a third person in relation to the incident and do not have anyone in custody.
Police have blocked off the street.
Blackbutt Parade runs parallel to the Newcastle Inner City Bypass but is accessed off Charlestown Road south of Myall Road.
The incident occurred midway along Blackbutt Parade at a house on its western side.
Neighbours said they heard what sounded like three gunshots shortly after 5pm.
Daniel Manak, 35, heard two of the gunshots while sitting at home watching television.
"My next door neighbour come banging on the fence and said she had heard a third one," he said.
"I thought shit what's going on ... they were definitely louder than a cracker.
"Then the coppers turned up left, right and centre."
Mr Manak, a Kotara South resident for about nine months, said he "had no idea" whose house it was he "just heard the bangs".
"It's a great street, we never have any dramas," he said. "It's nice and quiet."
Blackbutt Parade resident Chris Vassallo, 49, was stunned to hear the incident had occurred only a few doors away from his and his wife's home.
They returned from watching the Knights match at McDonald Jones Stadium about 5.45pm to find the street blocked off by police cars.
"We've lived here for two years, it's a great street with friendly neighbours and we're just shocked this has happened," he said.
"You'd expect this sort of thing down in Sydney, or greater western Sydney, but not up here in Newcastle."
