Two men confirmed dead after Wexford plane crash as gardai and emergency services remain at scene

Two men have tragically died after an aircraft crashed in Co Wexford.

The light aircraft crashed around 5:45pm on Sunday in Duncormick.

It is believed that the small airplane exploded on impact with the ground or shortly after.

The plane is thought to have taken off from an airfield in the Taghmon area, just minutes from where it crashed.

The bodies of the two men, whose ages are unknown, are due to be removed for post mortems.

Councillor Michael Sheehan from New Ross was quick to pay tribute.

He said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the casualties and their families and our thanks to the Emergency Services involved.”

Another local added: “Absolute tragedy, those poor men and their families.”

Members of the Gardai, fire brigade and Coast Guard attended the scene of the accident.

A garda spokesman said: “Two men have been confirmed deceased following a light aircraft accident at Duncormick, Co Wexford this evening, Sunday 6 October 2019.

"Their bodies remain at the scene and will be removed shortly for post mortem examinations.

Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a light aircraft accident which happened at 5.45pm.

“Initial reports indicate that there are two casualties."

He added: “The Air Accident Investigation unit are travelling to the scene and the Irish Aviation Authority have been notified.”
