Two men charged over fatal Bonnyrigg brawl granted bail

Two men charged over a fatal brawl in Sydney's west last week have been granted bail.

Nou Loeung, 33, appeared in Fairfield Local Court charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Steve Huynh, 26, appeared in a separate hearing at the same court charged with affray.

Defence Loeung's hearing lawyer Steven Boland told the court that before the fight, Loeung was at his home with his wife and three young children.

The court heard Loeung had allowed a female acquaintance who complained she was being threatened by her boyfriend into his house.

The court heard a gang of at least eight people, one of whom was allegedly Loeung's acquaintance's boyfriend, then arrived at the Bonnyrigg home with weapons.

During the bail application, Boland told the court the group of men were not known to Loeung, a father of three, who tried to warn them away.

Boland said when that did not work, Loeung went into the house and returned with a knife, in what he said was a "justifiable defence".

Loeung and one of his friends then fought with the group.

Charged man may not regain full use of hands

Loeung appeared in court with two arms heavily bandaged.

Six of his tendons and two of his nerves were severed during the fight, and the court heard he may not regain full use of his hands.

Mr Boland argued police had not identified how the 25-year-old man died, or who killed him.

A police prosecutor argued Loeung should not be granted bail because there was an unacceptable risk he would not show up to trial.

He also said Loeung could interfere with witnesses.

However Magistrate Peter Bugden said Loeung seemed unlikely to flee the country if released from jail, and granted him bail under conditions.

Both men will return to court next month.
