Two men have been charged after they were allegedly found in possession of chemicals used to make illegal drugs during a traffic stop in suburban Newcastle.
Police were patrolling Wallsend about 11.45am on Tuesday when they stopped a Subaru Forrester on Cowper Street and spoke to two men - aged 26 and 30.
The men were arrested for alleged traffic offences and outstanding arrest warrants.
Police said in a statement that officers found "precursors consistent with the alleged manufacture of prohibited drugs" as well as drug paraphernalia, methylamphetamine and GBL during a search of the vehicle.
Hazardous material specialists from Fire and Rescue NSW were called to make the area safe and State Crime Command drug squad detectives processed the scene.
The alleged driver - a 30-year-old Jesmond man - was charged with driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period.
The 26-year-old Raymond Terrace man was charged with four outstanding warrants for numerous property, drug, weapon and breach of bail offences.
Both men were refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.
Police said investigations into the items located during the vehicle search were ongoing.
