Two men charged after police officer assaulted during pharmacy break-in

A pair of men have been charged after a police officer was assaulted during a break-in at a disused pharmacy.

Police were called to the recently closed Lees Pharmacy in Bennetts Lane, Smithills , at around 3am yesterday morning (Friday).

It followed a burglary inside the store after which two men were involved in a scuffle with officers.

This morning Michael O'Hara, 38, from Ralph Street, Halliwell, has been charged with burglary, assaulting an emergency worker and possession of cannabis.

Stephen Courtney, 42, of no fixed abode, has also been changed with burglary and assaulting an emergency worker.

The pair are set to appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court this morning.

Lees Pharmacy was forced to close last week, after 95 years of serving the local community , with the owner blaming recent cuts to pharmacy funding from the government.
