Two men arrested over July 2020 shooting of Thomas McCarthy in Ballyfermot, Dublin

Two men were arrested this morning in connection with a July shooting.

Thomas McCarthy was shot up to eight times after answering the door of his mother’s home at Croftwood Park in Ballyfermot, Dublin at around 11am on Monday, July 27 2020.

The dad and grandad was not involved in crime and was targeted by a lone hitman after being dragged into a personal dispute, it is believed.

The two men, aged in their early 30s and mid-20s, were arrested this morning under the provisions of Section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act 1999 and are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Lucan and Clondalkin Garda Stations, gardai said.

Gardai added in a statement: "Gardai are continuing to appeal to any person with information on this fatal shooting incident to make contact with Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Mr McCarthy had only returned to his family home in Croftwood Park a week before the brutal murder.

He had been living in Southend on Sea in England, where he had raised a family.

On his visit home it’s believed he became embroiled in a dispute involving someone he knew who was assaulted by a violent local criminal.

It also emerged that the killer used three separate getaway cars in the brazen daylight murder.

The shooter drove himself to the attack and sped away from the scene in a blue Ford Fiesta which he abandoned just minutes away at Le Fanu Drive in Ballyfermot.

He torched the car and jumped into a second getaway vehicle – a silver Skoda Octavia – which had been left there as part of the planned hit.

The gunman drove the Skoda another short distance to the nearby Monksfield area in Clondalkin, where it was also abandoned and set on fire, before calmly walking away.

A third vehicle was also seen acting suspiciously around the corner from where the killer abandoned the Skoda, and was later found burned out.

The black Toyota Avensis with registration number 10-D-123251 was sighted in the vicinity of Woodford Walk between 10.57am and 11.06am.

The car was later discovered burnt out on Peamount Road, Newcastle, Co. Dublin at 9.30pm.
