Two men arrested in connection with fatal shooting of Lucan man Wayne Whelan

Two men have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Wayne Whelan in Lucan in November of last year.

The 42-year-old was shot in the back of the head before being left in a flaming car in Mount Andrew Estate, Lucan, on November 18th.

It’s understood the victim had been lured to his death by someone he knew before being shot dead.

A man in his 30s is currently being detained at Lucan Garda Station while the second male is being held at Ronanstown Garda Station.

Whelan survived an earlier bid on his life in September 2019 when a gunman sprayed ten bullets through his windscreen, hitting him several times.

Whelan was also a suspect in the murder of violent criminal Mark ‘the Guinea Pig’ Desmond,41, blasted to death three years ago.

Detectives believe he was behind the hit on drug dealer David ‘Chen’ Lynch, 42, gunned down in broad daylight on March 1 in the Foxdene area of Lucan.

In December, two men were charged in connection with the shooting and appeared before Blanchardstown District Court on 17th December.

A female was also arrested along with the two men on 12th December but was released without charge the following day with a file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Speaking about the arrests today, a garda spokesman said: "Gardaí have arrested two men this morning, Monday 17 February 2020, in relation to the fatal shooting of a male in Lucan on 18 November 2019."

"A male in his 30s is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at Lucan Garda Station.

"The second male is being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at Ronanstown Garda Station.
