Two men arrested in connection to Newbottle rape as investigation continues

Two men have been arrested in connection to a rape in Newbottle.

An investigation was launched after a woman was attacked by a masked man in her home on July 27.

Detectives said the suspect, who was described as white and wearing a hooded top, fled the scene.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape shortly after the incident and has been released under investigation. He remains a person of interest at this time.

A second man, aged 36, was arrested but has since been released with no further action.

The victim is being supported by specialist officers after immediately reporting the sexual assault to police.

Northumbria Police is appealing for anyone with information about any males in the area that evening or who have suspicions about any males to contact police.

Detective chief inspector Louise Cass-Williams said: "No matter how insignificant a person may feel their information is, I can reassure them that it is not insignificant.

"We need to hear from them so that my officers can ensure that they expedite every possible line of enquiry, that we use every tactic and that we do everything we can to identify the male responsible and bring him to justice."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1205 27/07/20.
