Two men have been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of champion boxer Kevin Sheehy as the garda probe was tonight upgraded to murder.
The fatal incident took place at around 4.40am on Monday morning on the Hyde Road in Limerick.
A black Mitsubishi Shogun jeep, which was involved in the collision, failed to remain at the scene this morning.
Two men, one in his late teens and the other in his late twenties, are being held at a Midlands Garda station on suspicion of murder.
Gardai are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
A Garda statement this evening read: “Gardaí investigating a fatal hit and run incident between a pedestrian and a jeep that occurred on Hyde Road in Limerick at approximately 4:40am on 1st July 2019, have this evening arrested two male suspects (ages unknown at this point) who are currently being detained at a Midlands Garda Station on suspicion of murder.
"There will be no Garda spokesperson at this time.
“Gardaí continue to appeal for anyone with information on the incident, particularly anyone in the area around the time of the collision, who may have dash cam footage, to contact them at Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda confidential line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
Gardai later added in an update: "The two male suspects arrested and detained at a Midlands Garda Station on suspicion of murder are aged in their late teens and late twenties."
