Two men arrested after 'suspicious' fire

Two men have been arrested after a "suspicious" fire last weekend.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said officers were called just after midnight on Saturday, April 18 to support the fire service with a blaze in Lower Hanham Road.

The statement added: "A caravan was reported to be on fire to rear of a property.

"Two males were subsequently arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life."

The force said both men had been released under investigation.

DS Daniel Rowan said: “House-to-house and CCTV enquiries were carried out during the preliminary stages of the investigation.

“But we are keen to hear from anybody who saw people acting suspiciously overnight on Friday night and the early hours of Saturday morning.

“This fire did cause a significant amount of damage, but thankfully no-one was injured.

“Although we are treating the fire as suspicious, we do believe it is an isolated incident.”

At the time of the fire, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters used two breathing apparatus for safety, one high pressure hose reel and one 45mm jet to extinguish the fire.

The fire service said the cause of the fire was thought to be deliberate.

The fire comes as Avon Fire and Rescue Service revealed the number of deliberate fires it had attended since lockdown had gone up to an average 5.2 a day - up from 3.6 before March 23.

Simon Shilton, assistant chief fire officer, said: “It is so disappointing to see that at a time when we all need to be coming together to support one another we still have people committing crimes and ruining our local communities."
