Two men arrested after police stop car in Longbenton and find six drums of fuel in the back

Two men have been arrested following an alleged theft at a petrol station.

At around 12.30pm on Tuesday afternoon, police were called to a petrol station on Forum Way in Cramlington to reports that someone had made off without paying for fuel.

Officers then pursued a vehicle suspected to have been involved and brought it to a stop in Longbenton before discovering six drums of fuel in the back.

An investigation is now under way.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 12.30pm today (Tuesday), police received a report of theft from a petrol station on Forum Way in Cramlington.

“It was reported that the occupants had made off without paying for a quantity of fuel.

“Officers pursued the vehicle in question which was brought to a safe stop in the Glenfield Road area of Longbenton. Six drums of fuel were found by officers in the back of the car.

“Two men – aged 23 and 24 – were arrested and remain in police custody. They are currently assisting officers with their enquiries.”
