Two men arrested after police find £500,000 in Tesco bags

Two men have been arrested after police officers found as much as £1million in ill-gotten cash earlier this week.

At around 2pm on Tuesday, officers stopped a black BMW on Kirkstone Road West, Litherland.

The car was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act and more than £200,000 in cash was recovered from the vehicle.

The driver, a 29-year-old man from Litherland, was arrested on suspicion of possession of criminal property. A further search of his home address found another £50,000 in cash.

A home in Netherton was searched later and more than £500,000 in cash was found in Tesco bags for life.

A 36-year-old man from Netherton was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

Both men have now been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

The total amount of cash seized by officers is estimated to be between £750,000 and £1 million in cash.

Matrix Operations Inspector Matthew Farmer said: "The arrests and extremely significant cash seizure today is a great example of work by our officers to remove ill-gotten cash from our streets.

“An investigation is ongoing and we will continue to protect our communities from criminality in Merseyside and beyond.

“No criminal should profit from misery while our wider law-abiding communities work hard to earn an honest living. If you know someone involved in crime, please let us know so we can take them off our streets.”

Anyone with information on crime in their area is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress.
