Two men arrested after police discover drugs and weapons searching suspicious car in Sunderland

Two men have been arrested after police seized a stash of suspected amphetamine and weapons from a suspicious vehicle in Sunderland.

Officers were travelling in the Hylton Road area of the city at around 4.25pm on Thursday when a grey Audi caught their attention.

After carrying out checks on the vehicle, officers followed it until the driver stopped and headed into a convenience store.

Officers continued to monitor the vehicle before speaking to the driver and a male passenger.

They then carried out a search of the car and discovered a number of bags of white powder, believed to be amphetamine, along with a baseball bat, golf club and pick axe handle.

The two men – aged 37 and 36 – were arrested and taken into police custody. They have since been released under investigation with inquiries ongoing.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Robson, of Northumbria Police, said: "This was an excellent example of officers trusting their instincts after spotting something that looked suspicious.

"Their keen eye resulted in a quantity of illegal drugs being taken off our streets and a number of offensive weapons being seized.

"An investigation is ongoing into the discoveries, and we make no apology for our robust stance on tackling drug-related crime in our city.

"We know how detrimental and corrosive an impact that drug misuse can have on the most vulnerable in our communities, so we will continue to do all we can to seize these illicit substances, and take action against anybody found in possession of them."

Anyone who sees anything suspicious in their community is asked to contact police via the 'Tell Us Something' page of Northumbria Police website or by calling 101. In an emergency, always ring 999.
