Two men arrested after cash stolen from shop and fake firearm found in wrecked car

Two men have been arrested after cash was stolen from a shop and a fake firearm was found in a car.

Gardai say two armed men stormed a shop on the Main Street in Rathcoole on Saturday night around 9:30pm and threatened staff before making off with a sum of cash.

The pair fled the scene on foot before getting into a car, which was seen on the M9 before crashing into a ditch.

Gardai nabbed the pair after they wrecked the car with assistance from the Dog Unit and the Air Support Unit.

Gardai also found the cash, a fake firearm, a hammer, and other items in the car.

The pair, both in their 20s, were taken to Clondalkin Garda Station, but both have since been released.

A garda statement reads: "Gardai arrested two males following the aggravated robbery of a shop on Main Street, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin which occurred at approximately 9:30pm on the 21st August 2021.

"Two armed males entered the premises and made threats to staff before taking an amount of cash. They fled the scene on foot and were later spotted entering a vehicle.

"The vehicle was observed traveling outbound on the M9 in the Kildare area. The vehicle came to a stop when it came off the road and collided with a ditch, with both occupants fleeing on foot.

"With the assistance of the Garda Air Support Unit and Garda Dog Unit, both suspects were located and arrested.

"A search of the suspects’ vehicle recovered an amount of cash as well as an imitation firearm, a hammer and other items.

"Both males, aged in their 20s, were taken to Clondalkin Garda Station and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"They have since been released and a file will now be prepared for the DPP."
