Two men arrested after aggravated robbery at Calwell supermarket

Several members of the public helped stop two men armed with knives from robbing the Woolworths supermarket in Calwell on Saturday night.

Two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday following the attempted aggravated robbery.

It will be alleged that about 9.40pm the two men entered the Woolworths supermarket armed with knives and demanded money.

Several members of the public intervened, and one of the offenders fled the scene on foot.

During a short scuffle, one of the members of the public received a cut to one hand before the second offender dropped his knife. That offender was then restrained and prevented from leaving the store until police arrived a short time later.

Following a report from another member of the public, the first alleged offender was found hiding in a nearby garage and arrested. The 24-year-old man will face charges of joint commission of aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon, trespass, and breach of intensive correction order.

The second alleged offender, a 27-year-old man, will face charges of joint commission of aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon and breach of parole.

The men will be remanded in custody.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website and quote reference 6478681. Information can be provided anonymously.
