Two men accused of street attack in Liverpool which left man in coma

Two men appeared in court accused of a street attack in Liverpool city centre which left a man in a coma.

Joseph Musumeci and a second man face allegations of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and assault in relation to an incident outside Heebie Jeebies nightclub on August 8.

Joseph Musumeci is also charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.

The alleged victim, 29-year-old Matthew Webber, was initially said to be in a critical condition after sustaining serious head injuries.

He was placed in a medically induced coma by doctors and his condition is now described by police as “stable”.

The incident happened at around 2.55am on the junction of Seel Street and Colquitt Street.

Mr Webber and two friends were walking down Seel Street, intending to go to a takeaway, when Mr Webber was allegedly attacked.

One of his companions, Nicholas Cakebread, was also allegedly assaulted.

Joseph, 28, of Meaden Way in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from HMP Forest Bank.

The court heard there was no indications of plea from the defendants at this stage.

Judge Denis Watson, QC, said a plea and case management hearing would be held on November 2.

He set a provisional trial, estimated to last four days, for the week commencing February 1 next year.

Joseph, unshaven with short dark hair and wearing a grey t-shirt, was remanded in custody.
