Two Manchester United players named in England squad but Aaron Wan-Bissaka left out

Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire have been named in England's squad for their upcoming games against Montenegro and Kosovo.

There is, however, no room for Aaron Wan-Bissaka despite the right-back's encouraging start to his Manchester United career.

Chris Smalling has impressed for Roma of late but his international exile continues. His last appearance for England came in a 2-2 draw with Scotland in October 2017.

Gareth Southgate's justification for omitting Smalling two years ago was that John Stones, Eric Dier and Harry Maguire were better at playing the ball out from the back.

Stones was culpable for Croatia's winning goal in last year's World Cup semi-final and Dier has operated as a centre-back for England just once since Southgate decided Smalling wasn't suitable.

Jesse Lingard has not been recalled, nor has Phil Jones. Luke Shaw remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and will have a challenge on his hands to get back in the squad when he does return to full fitness.

Full squad

Goalkeepers: Heaton, Pickford, Pope

Defenders: Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Gomez, Maguire, Mings, Rose, Stones, Tomori

Midfielders: Barkley, Delph, Henderson, Maddison, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rice, Winks

Forwards: Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, Kane, Rashford, Sancho, Sterling, Wilson
