Two Man City stars named in the Ballon d'Or top 10

Man City stars Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva have been recognised for their brilliant performances in 2019 by being named in the Ballon d'Or list of top 10 best footballers in the world.

The Ballon d'Or is the most prestigious individual award that a footballer can win and it's big significance comes because it's voted for by fellow colleagues, the captains and managers of national sides.

As a result international achievements factor heavily in the voting as well which explains why Bernardo and Mahrez made the top ten over any other of City's great players.

Bernardo helped Portugal to become the inaugural winners of the Nations League in the summer whereas Mahrez led Algeria to African Cup of Nations glory and scored a brilliant, last gasp free-kick to win the semi-final.

These achievements on top of their contributions to City's historical treble triumph last season as they took home the Premier League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup makes them well deserving of their place in the top ten.

Mahrez was ranked in 10th place whereas Bernardo came 9th.

More of City's players were involved in the top rankings as well, as Sergio Aguero came in 16th place, Kevin De Bruyne came 14th despite his injury plagued season and Raheem Sterling just missed out on the top 10 as he came in 12th.

The rest of the top 10 consisted of Liverpool stars Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, as well as Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was Messi who won the award for a record sixth time, with Van Dijk coming second and Ronaldo third.

Meanwhile Ederson came third in the Yachine Trophy standing, behind winner Alisson and Marc Andre Ter-Stegen and former Blue Lucy Bronze lost out to Megan Rapinoe in the race for the women's Ballon d'Or.
