Two Maesteg schools hit by coronavirus cases as more than 160 pupils told to self-isolate

Two more schools in Maesteg have confirmed pupils have tested positive for coronavirus, with more than 160 pupils being told to self-isolate.

One pupil has tested positive for Covid-19 at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cynwyd Sant and approximately four members of staff and 60 pupils from years one and two are self-isolating as a result.

At Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, one pupil has also tested positive for Covid-19.

More than 100 pupils from year 10 are now self-isolating, as well as two pupils from year 9. No staff at the secondary school have been affected.

Charles Smith, cabinet member for education and regeneration at Bridgend council, said: "As schools have been preparing for pupils to return for some time now, they have been able to take swift action in each case and act promptly upon the precautionary advice supplied by Public Health Wales.

"Parents, carers and guardians can support these efforts by remaining vigilant, and not sending children to school if they exhibit any of the symptoms related to the coronavirus.

"All schools have a full range of measures in place to reduce risk, limit contact and maintain high standards of hygiene, and unaffected pupils should continue to attend lessons as normal.

"Those who are self-isolating are also continuing to receive lessons thanks to online access, virtual classrooms and blended learning facilities.

"The pandemic is far from over, and I’d like to thank pupils, teachers, staff, parents, carers and guardians for their continued co-operation and understanding.

"This is still very much an ongoing process, and we will of course keep you up to date on new developments, procedures and emerging national guidance."

Other schools in the Bridgend local authority area with positive cases include:

  • Ysgol Bryn Castell - one member of staff has tested positive. A further 17 members of staff and 39 pupils are self-isolating.

  • Maesteg School - one member of staff has tested positive. Five members of staff are self-isolating, but no pupils have been affected.

  • Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School - One member of staff has tested positive. No further staff or pupils are affected.
