Two lorries collide in M5 crash as driver parks to protect Ford Fiesta

Two lorries collided on the M5 as one driver attempted to protect a Ford Fiesta, leading to the road being closed until Monday.

Gloucestershire police have revealed details of what happened in the serious crash on the M5 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were called at 5.20am to reports of a Ford Fiesta leaving the road.

A lorry had then parked itself behind the car in an attempt to try to protect it from traffic on the motorway.

However, there was then a collision between the second lorry and the parked lorry on the motorway.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: “Police were called at 5.20am this morning (Sunday, September 13) with a report of a Ford Fiesta leaving the motorway.

“A lorry had then parked behind the Ford Fiesta to offer help and protect the vehicle. There was then a collision between another lorry and the first lorry.

“The M5 is shut both ways between junction 9 and 11. The southbound lanes are due to be open within the hour however the northbound lanes are expected to remain closed until approximately 6pm this evening.”

‘Explosions’ were heard from three miles away in Bishop’s Cleeve following the crash early on Sunday morning.

Although Gloucestershire Constabulary expect to reopen the road by 6pm, Highways England have already confirmed that the road will be closed until Monday to carry out repairs.

It is not known at this stage if anyone has been injured in the crash.
