Two Llanelli rugby clubs closed down for coronavirus breaches

Two rugby clubs in Llanelli have been shut down for two weeks for not adhering to Covid-19 guidelines.

A total of 158 venues were checked during the weekend by enforcement officers from Carmarthenshire council and Dyfed-Powys Police to ensure that all the criteria was being met and there were no breaches of regulations.

Llangennech Rugby Social Club and Felinfoel Rugby Club were both handed closure notices for breaches of Covid-19 regulations.

Alongside the two clubs, Llandybie Social and Athletic Club and the Cross Keys Inn in Glanamman were also ordered to close for 14 days and Tafarn y Felin in Swiss Valley and Llanelli's South Star were handed notices.

The closures come days after a rising number of cases in Llanelli which prompted Wales' first and only 'town-level' lockdown.

The town was placed in new lockdown restrictions from 6pm on Saturday, September 26, after it was heard there were 151.6 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 population in Llanelli, eight out of 10 of all the cases in Carmarthenshire over the previous seven-day period.

Officials say that while the majority of licensed venues were enforcing all necessary procedures, a small number of businesses had to be given closure notices after falling short.

A number of other premises were also given improvement notices and enforcement officers are said to be checking on these businesses to ensure safety measures have improved.
