Two Leinster players test positive for Covid-19

Two Leinster players have tested positive for Covid-19.

One player was tested outside the PCR testing window, after feeling unwell, and is now self-isolating.

Further PCR testing was carried out at Leinster Rugby yesterday morning on 104 players and staff and 103 tests returned negative results, with one senior player testing positive and he is also self-isolating.

A number of close contacts of the two players have been identified and these players are also self-isolating.

The HSE has been informed in accordance with public health guidelines.

The Leinster Rugby squad return to training later on today ahead of the scheduled PRO14 clash with Connacht on January 2.

The news follows the postponement of the Munster v Leinster PRO14 fixture that was scheduled for St Stephen's Day.

The game was called off on Christmas Eve, before Leinster confirmed that all outstanding Covid-19 testing results had been returned and all players and staff had tested negative.

The fixture is due to go ahead during the Six Nations championship.

Speaking to the media this morning, Leinster head coach Leo Cullen said he was confident that the Connacht game would go ahead.

"Yeah," he said. "There were 104 tests yesterday, we weren’t in last week off the back of last week because of the uncertainty around some of those tests that came back positive and then subsequently were negative.

"The decision was made to postpone the game. We had one positive case this morning, and that player is isolating, other than that we are good to go.

"We had one player with symptoms in between, that was the worry for us...with people doing family bits over the Christmas period and the decision was made with the PRO14 and all the various medics to postpone. We weren’t in last week."

Asked if he could name the players who tested positive, Cullen replied: "It's top secret stuff, out of respect for the individuals."
