Two League games set to move in the wake of Sunderland's Wembley appearance

Two Sunderland fixtures are set to be rearranged as a result of the Black Cats winning through to the EFL Trophy final.

Sunderland's penalty shootout win against Lincoln City at the Stadium of Light last night means they will now play League Two Tranmere Rovers in the final of the competition at Wembley, with that game due to take place on Sunday, March 14.

And that means the Wearsiders' game at relegation strugglers Wigan Athletic, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 13, will have to be moved.

Not only that, but Sunderland were due to play Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground on Tuesday, March 16 - just 48 hours after the Black Cats' Wembley appearance - and that game is also likely to be moved to allow Lee Johnson's side additional time to prepare.

The trip to Accrington has already been postponed once, with the fixture having originally been planned for December 29, 2020, but the Covid outbreak at the Academy of Light meant it had to be rearranged.

It is possible that Sunderland's game at Accrington could be delayed by 24 hours until the Wednesday evening.

But the game against Wigan will have to be delayed for longer, with Sunderland's first free midweek slot not falling until the week beginning March 21.
