Two railway workers have been killed and 27 injured as a high-speed train derailed in the northern Italian province of Lodi in the early hours of Thursday, officials said.

Emergency services were at the scene and a railway official said two had suffered serious injuries after the accident on the line between Milan and Bologna.

The train, known as Freccia Rossi, skipped the tracks some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Italy's financial capital Milan at approximately 5.30am local time (04:30 GMT), state railways said in a statement.

It added that the causes of the accident were being investigated.

Italy's TG1 channel posted a video on social media showing the aftermath of the scene. The train can be seen turned on its side and broken as a helicopter circles above.
