PRACHIN BURI: Two children, a boy and a girl, drowned while looking for shellfish in a pond during a school vacation in Nadi district of this eastern province on Saturday, police said.
Pol Capt Yuthaphum Damrongtham, a Nadi police investigator, said a team of police, rescue workers and administrative officials rushed to the pond after being reported of the incident which occurred at about 5pm at the pond, about 500 metres from Ban Khlong Ta Muen in tambon Thung Pho.
The rescue workers recovered the body of the boy, seven-year-old Danupat Chuangthip, and managed to save the life a girl, Mingkamol Ampatcha, 9, from drowning before dusk, while another girl, nine-year-old Duangdao Khunkrai, disappeared. In the continued search, they found her body at about at about 9pm.
A police investigation revealed that the incident took place after four schoolchildren, one boy and three girls, all of Khlong Ta Muen Community School, went down into the pond at about 3pm to look for shellfish.
At about 5pm, Kamol Buasaeng, one of the girls, ran to the village and called for help, saying that her three friends were drowning, prompting the villagers to inform the police.
