Two key transfers Chelsea should make if Roman Abramovich sanctions marquee signings

After a transfer ban last summer and Chelsea failing to sign anyone in January, Blues fans will be hoping for a summer raid.

Frank Lampard’s job this season has been made more difficult by the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, while he has been unable to bring in any fresh players.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the Blues were set to be one of the busiest clubs this summer to help boost the squad.

However, the whole transfer window could look very different, with money potentially being at a premium.

But if Roman Abramovich is ready to help splash the cash over the summer to help push the Blues towards Liverpool and Manchester City, then who should be the main two targets?

Lampard made it clear in January that he was after a new forward or two, and that is unlikely to change this summer.

The first, if the Blues owner is really going to pump money into the squad, is Jadon Sancho.

The 20-year-old winger is in blistering form for Borussia Dortmund this summer, and his hat-trick against Paderborn at the weekend took his goal tally to 17 in the Bundesliga.

Along with 16 assists, Sancho has been one of the most prolific players in the German league and has been hotly tipped with a return to England.

Manchester United appear to be leading the way for his signature, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to make him a new United player.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have always been linked but the real interest is coming from England, meaning a potential return to these shores.

The big issue is the fee. The England international has shown himself to be one of the brightest talents in the game, and so isn’t expected to go for anything less than £100million.

Even if Abramovich is willing to open the chequebook, a signing for Sancho could be potentially too much for even the Russian.

But if the Blues are to make a marquee signing, then Sancho would be top of the list.

For the second, it would be wise to stick in Germany with the talents of Timo Werner.

The German has, as well, been superb for RB Leipzig up top, adding his 25 th Bundesliga goal of the campaign last night at FC Koln.

Once again, Chelsea have not really been the front runners for his signature, with Liverpool having lead the way to bring him to the Premier League.

Werner reportedly is keen to move to Anfield, but if Liverpool’s interest cools then Werner could be the perfect player to come over to Stamford Bridge.

Both Sancho and Werner would be very difficult to get and potentially out of reach of the Blues, but they are certainly worth pursuing.
