Two key Irish pub grey areas that need sorting fully ahead of indoor dining reopening

The latest blow for the hospitality sector has been revealed as ordering at a bar is set to be banned when restaurants and pubs reopen for vaccinated people next week.

Despite publican representative groups strongly objecting to this rule, senior Government officials eliminated the possibility of customers being able to sit at bars to have a drink.

This is among the regulations currently being drafted ahead of the phased reopening of indoor hospitality.

Another grey area being worked on is the issue of time limits.

Customers must leave pubs and restaurants after an hour and 45 minutes if tables are one meter or less apart, according to current regulations drafted by Failte Ireland - there is no time limit if tables are two meters apart.

However, it is being considered for the time limit to be scrapped for vaccinated customers sitting one meter apart.

Speaking on Newstalk on Tuesday evening, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said that while he wants to see time limits gone, he "would prefer to do that with the support of public health advisors rather than as a political decision".

The issue of the EU Digital Covid Certificates is also a hot topic, with discussions taking place on Tuesday between the hospitality working group and hospitality representatives.

The topic of responsibility for checking vaccination certificates for indoor dining was discussed at the meeting.
