Two key Ajax players speak out on Antony future amid Manchester United transfer interest

Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn has inferred that Antony could make an exit before deadline day with Manchester United keen on the Brazilian.

Bergwijn was left out of the Dutch club’s 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday following reports that the winger is 'on strike’. Afterwards, Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder said he is “assuming” that Antony will stay at the club.

The Eredivisie champions have already lost a host of key personnel this summer including Ryan Gravenberch, Sebastian Haller and United signing Lisandro Martinez. “I would not find it okay if we sell another player,” Schreuder underlined.

Bergwijn hit the winner in Saturday’s match to send his side two points clear at the top of the table. When asked about the future of teammate Antony post-match, the ex-Tottenham attacker remained coy but said: “I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but everyone has dreams. If it continues, I wish him the best. I’d be sad if he left, but everyone has dreams.”

Meanwhile, captain Dusan Tadic admitted that his side rued the absence of Antony, adding: "He’s a great player, we know that. We miss him and have to wait and see what will happen. I spoke to him. You always try to talk to players. He is 22 years old, a grown man. He knows what to do. You can always say what you want, but he makes a decision with the club.”

Antony has scored and assisted twice in three Ajax appearances this season, taking his record to 24 goals and 24 assists in 84 games since his 2020 switch from Sao Paulo.
