Two Irish rugby fans arrested on suspicion of heroin possession in Tokyo, Japan

Two Irish rugby fans have been arrested on suspicion of violating strict drug control laws in Japan.

It has been reported in Japan that the two men were allegedly found with heroin in their possession at a karaoke bar in Shinjuku, near Tokyo on Friday night.

According to local media reports the two men had arrived in Japan a week before their arrest and were planning on going to Shizuoka Prefecture for the Japan-Ireland Rugby World Cup game on Saturday.

Japanese media reported that an employee of the karaoke bar called police to report that a man was lying unconscious in a booth.

When police arrived, they found the two suspects allegedly in possession of heroin, which was attached to a binder.

It is understood that one of the men, aged in his 20s, denied the allegation while the other man, who is aged in his 30s was taken to hospital.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said they are "aware of the incident and are providing consular assistance."

Under Japanese anti-narcotics laws, the two men can be held for an initial period of 28 days.

It will then be open to a prosecutor to seek a formal hearing - if found not guilty the men will be immediately released.

If convicted of drug possession, they face the possibility of a prison term or face a fine and deportation.
