Two Irish rugby fans arrested in Tokyo on suspicion of heroin possession

Two Irish rugby fans have been arrested on suspicion of violating drug control laws in Japan, where the Rugby World Cup is currently being held.

Reports in Japan say that the two men were allegedly found with heroin in their possession at a karaoke bar in Shinjuku, near Tokyo on Friday night.

According to reports the men arrived in Japan a week before their arrest.

They were apparently planning on going to Shizuoka Prefecture for the Japan-Ireland Rugby World Cup game on Saturday.

Media in Japan are reporting police were called after a man was found unconscious in the bathroom of the karaoke bar.

When officers arrived at the bar, they found the two suspects allegedly in possession of the drug, which had been attached to a binder.

A man in his 20s has allegedly denied the allegation while the other man arrested, who is aged in his 30s, was taken to a local hospital.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said they are "aware of the incident and are providing consular assistance."

Under Japanese strict anti-narcotics laws, the two men can be held for an initial period of 28 days.

If convicted of drug possession, they face either a prison term or a fine and deportation.
