TWO Irish republican marches are due to take place in Glasgow next month with hundreds of people expected on the streets.
On Saturday, August 8, Friends of IRPWA (Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association) Scotland is holding an “anti-internment” walk in Glasgow.
Around 400 people are estimated to take part in the march through the East End of the city.
The march will start at Causewayside Street in Tollcross at 11 am and head along Tollcross Road, Gallowgate, Moir Street to Barrowlands Park near Glasgow Cross.
The group will stay at the park for a rally and speeches, which the organisers say will be from “groups representing political prisoners in Ireland and beyond”.
Friends of IRPWA Scotland states: “There are currently Irish republicans in Maghaberry Gaol who have been remanded for up to six years awaiting trial.”
IRPWA said it exists to: “Provide and maintain welfare for Republican Prisoners incarcerated in Maghaberry, Portlaoise and Hydebank Gaols. In addition to this, the IRPWA also assist the families of Republican Prisoners as well highlighting POW issues and campaigns."
It states: “Despite attempts to portray the ‘conflict’ as consigned to history, there remain men and women imprisoned as a direct consequence of their political beliefs and activities.”
The walk is on the same day that the protestant organisation the Provincial Grand Black Chapter of Scotland (below) is holding a large march in the Ibrox and Govan area of the city.
The weekend before, another Irish republican march will take place in the city from the East End to the Southside.
Cairde na hÉireann will march on Sunday August 2, from 13:00 at Barrowlands Park.
It is estimated 150 people are to take part in the parade.
The route goes along Gallowgate, Moir Street then London Road, to Glasgow Cross and down Saltmarket, and on to Crown Street, Laurieston Road, Cathcart Road and Myrtle Park to Queen's Park Recreational Ground.
Cairde na hÉireann, which means Friends of Ireland, is a Scottish group, set up in 2024, that campaigns for a united Ireland and is affiliated to Sinn Fein.
