Two injured after debris falls onto entrance of busy Cork shop

A busy shop in Cork city centre is closed after debris fell from the building onto the entrance.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after injuries were reported at the Dealz store on Grand Parade.

Two people were treated for minor injuries by a doctor, and later released, Cork Beo reports.

It is understood that part of the facade came loose and engineers are on the way to assess the building.

The building will remain cordoned off until engineers sign off on the safety of the structure.

There are no reports of further injuries and the building has now been evacuated.

There have been a series of similar incidents in the city in recent times.

In March, part of a wall of a building under renovation collapsed on Washington Street.

Just a month earlier, nine families had to be evacuated from their homes after the collapse of a wall at the back of their homes in the Shandon area - on Church Avenue, just off Roman Street and backing onto John Street - collapsed.

Last September, a young woman was injured when she was hit by masonry falling from a building on Patrick's Street.

Niamh Hegarty was on her way to work when she was struck by debris falling from the former Moderne Building - now occupied by Superdry - suffering neck and back injuries.

Ms Hegarty was helped by passers-bys and was later treated at the Mercy Hospital for her injuries. The building still has wooden props shoring up its window openings.

The previous June, the North Main Street saw a major collapse at the back of long-derelict buildings - some of the many that blight our city centre - which did not result in injury but did close the street for a number of weeks.
