Two men are in hospital and a third has been arrested after a stabbing at a shopping centre in Melbourne's inner north this morning.

Police said a customer queuing at a Woolworths store at the Barkly Square shopping centre on Sydney Road in Brunswick was stabbed at about 8am.

The 20-year-old alleged offender then left the store and stabbed a security guard who had confronted him.

Both victims have been taken to St Vincent's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Acting Senior Sergeant Sam Petch said the alleged offender suffered self-inflicted injuries and was arrested at the scene.

"There's nothing to suggest it's anything but a random attack," she said.

"The male is receiving a mental health assessment and he will be treated in hospital for that."

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics treated the three people and that all were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Witness Suzanne Stewart said she was shopping when she heard "yelling and screaming" and was confronted by a man with a knife.

"I was scared, I was petrified. I just wanted to get away from there," she said.

Barkly Square has been closed for the rest of the day while police investigate the matter.

Anyone with further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
