Two in hospital after crash which closed Gateshead road near Scotswood Bridge

Two people were taken to hospital following a multi-car crash which left a Gateshead road closed for several hours.

Emergency services were called to Derwenthaugh Road, between Scotswood Bridge and Riverside Way, at around 3.20pm on Saturday.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had sent three appliances to the scene of the crash, which involved two vehicles.

Police, fire and the North East Ambulance Service were all visible at the scene, where a badly damaged vehicle could be seen on the road.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 3.20pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Derwenthaugh Road.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, one crew from our hazardous area response team and an officer, and transported two patients to the RVI. "

The condition of the two patients is not known.

The road was closed in both directions until just before 5pm, when one lane reopened to traffic.
