Two in hospital after crash on M1 at Morisset

Two men have been taken to hospital after a serious multiple-vehicle crash at Lake Macquarie on Thursday morning.

Three NSW Ambulance and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to the M1 Pacific Motorway at Morisset just after 7.45am.

There, they found a man trapped in one of the vehicles with head and chest injuries.

He was removed from the car and air-lifted to to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

The 62-year-old has been placed in a medically-induced coma by the Critical Care medical team, a Westpac Rescue spokesperson said.

Another man was was treated for minor injuries at the scene and taken by ambulance to John Hunter Hospital.

Northbound lanes of the motorway were blocked at Morisset on Thursday morning while emergency crews were responding to the crash.

"We we'e extremely cautious as we arrived, priorities were safety and assessing patients," NSW Ambulance intensive care paramedic David Parker said.

"Paramedics along with the medical team worked closely to treat and carefully release the trapped male from his car before he was airlifted.

"An accident like this had the potential to be a major incident, please be careful on the motorways."
