Two in hospital after car smashes into house in Maitland suburb

Two people have been taken to hospital and a crime scene has been set up after a pursuit ended with a car ploughing into a home at Telarah yesterday.

Paramedics were called to the scene at Brooks Street, Telarah, about 2.30pm.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald a female passenger aged in her 20s was air-lifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

She is suspected to have internal injuries.

The driver, a man also aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital by road ambulance with suspected shoulder and spinal injuries.

Two adults and an infant were in the house at the time of the crash - none of them were injured.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Police said the pursuit began after patrolling officers saw a Holden Commodore speeding on the New England Highway.

They gave chase after the Holden did not stop before the driver of the Commodore lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of Raymond and Brooks streets - sending it crashing through two fences and into a house.

NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Peter Watts said the "vulnerability" of the home was the greatest challenge for emergency crews.

He said the front of the house had been completely destroyed in the crash, which made it difficult to access the patients.

"Stabilising the house and making sure it was secure was a huge priority for all of us and our NSW Ambulance rescue team were able to reinforce the damaged house," Mr Watts said.

"We always want to get in and start treating as soon as possible, but we also have to make sure that not only are our crews safe, but the patient is going to be safe as well.

"With things like suspected internal injuries, you obviously cannot see them and it the toughest thing for us is trying to treat injuries that you cannot see."

Police have set up a crime scene and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
