Two Hunter COVID cases in health district's 12

COVID-19 numbers have jumped in the Hunter New England to 12 on Wednesday.

Half of the new cases were from Moree Plains, four were from MidCoast and one each were recorded in Newcastle and Singleton.

Three were isolating while infectious and seven were infectious in the community. The other two are unknown.

Ten cases are linked to known exposures or clusters and two are unlinked.

The local jump in cases mirrors a spike across the state, which recorded 403 new cases and one death in the 24 hours to 8pm Tuesday - 143 more cases than the previous day. There have been 34 cases of the Omicron variant in NSW so far, none of which have required hospitalisation.

Authorities have raised fears a Sydney Harbour boat cruise on Friday night could be a superspreader event, with five new cases emerging from the party cruise. Preliminary results indicate two of the five COVID-positive party boat cruisers have the new Omicron variant, NSW Health said on Wednesday. All are isolating at home.

Authorities are trying to contact about 140 people who signed in with a QR code before boarding the boat on Friday, which left King Street Wharf 9 at 7.30pm and returned about 11pm.
