Two-hour police standoff after thieves steal adorable puppy then climb on cafe roof and refuse to come down

Thieves who stole an adorable puppy during a burglary clambered onto the roof of a coffee shop and spent TWO HOURS in a stand-off with police.

Tiny Shih-Tzu puppy Poppy was snatched from her home in Chadderton on Wednesday afternoon (June 5).

The culprits took the ten-week-old dog with them as they fled from the scene on Gorton Street.

Catching the tram to Oldham town centre, the crooks were met by police officers who were waiting for them when they got off at the Oldham King Street Metrolink stop.

The duo were chased by officers for a short time before they clambered onto the roof of Koffee Kingdom, on Foundary Street.

It is not known if they still had the puppy with them while on the roof.

Both men refused to leave and officers had to negotiate with them to come back down.

After two hours they came down from the roof safely and were arrested by waiting officers.

Two males aged 25 and 24 years old have been arrested in relation to the incident, police said.

Meanwhile, little Poppy has now been returned safe and well to her owner by police officers.

Details of the incident were shared in a post on the GMP Chadderton Facebook page on Wednesday evening.

It read: “Two males aged 25 and 24 years have been arrested following a Burglary on Gorton Street, Chadderton this afternoon. Stolen during the break was a 10 week old Shih-Tzu puppy.

“The males made good their escape by catching the metro link to Oldham King Street where officers were waiting for them. Following a short foot chase both males climbed onto the roof of Koffee Kingdom, Foundary Street and refused to come back down.

“Following negotiations both came down 2 hours later and were subsequently arrested.”

They added: “Both are currently in custody awaiting interview. Poppy has now been returned safe and well to her rightful owner.”
