Two hospitalised and residents evacuated after fire rips through Glasgow block of flats

Two women were rushed to hospital and multiple residents evacuated after a blaze tore through a five-storey building in Glasgow.

Fire crews raced to the scene at Dorset Square, Dorset Square, off Dorset Street near the city's Charing Cross, at around 4am on Wednesday.

Ambulance services also attended.

Two women were rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but is not believed to be suspicious.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told the Record: “We were alerted at 3.59am on Wednesday, April 29 to reports of a fire within a block of flats on Dorset Square, Glasgow.

“Four fire appliances and one aerial vehicle were mobilised to the scene, where crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished a fire within a ground floor property of a five-storey tenement building."

He continued: “Two female casualties suffering moderate smoke inhalation were passed into the care of Scottish Ambulance Service, and transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

“A number of properties within the building were evacuated, and firefighters worked to ensure there was no fire spread before ventilating areas affected by smoke.

“The last fire appliance left the scene at 9.20am.”
