Two historic Edinburgh sports pavilions will be demolished over safety fears

A pair of Edwardian-era sports pavilions in Edinburgh are to be demolished over safety fears.

The east and west pavilions at Warriston Playing Fields at Inverleith Row will be razed after the City of Edinburgh Council gave the green light on Tuesday, 28 September.

It's understood the timber frame pavilions, which contain multiple changing facilities and toilets, were constructed around 1910, when the Edinburgh School Board took over the running of Warriston Recreation Grounds for the hosting of school sporting events.

Operated by Edinburgh Leisure, the two buildings have suffered from incidents of vandalism and break-ins in recent years and are covered in graffiti.

An application to demolish the 110-year-old structures was submitted to the Council's planning department in July.

The application states that the removal of the pavilions is in the interests of public safety, by preventing "unauthorised access to buildings that are beyond economic repair".

Work to remove the pavilions will be carried out by Dalton Demolitions in coming weeks.

Warriston Playing Fields has played host to various local sporting events over the years, including football, rugby, cricket and softball matches.

Former Scottish league footballer David Larter played at Warriston as a schoolboy, lifting the School Board Cup for Bruntsfield Primary School at the ground in 1971.

Mr Larter, who played as a goalkeeper for Montrose FC in the 1990s, said he was sad to learn that the "iconic" pavilions were to be demolished.

He said: "It's very sad news. Warriston was the Edinburgh Schools' Hampden and the pavilions were iconic.

"I still remember the wooden floors and benches, and also the veranda fence at the front.

"A sad day, but hopefully they build the new dressing rooms in a similar fashion rather than some new block."
