Two held for taking haftas from hawkers

MUMBAI: In a special drive by city police commissioner Sanjay Pandey, the Anti Extortion cell of the crime branch have arrested two extortionists who used to collect haftas daily from hawkers in South Mumbai.

This is the fifth such case. Here, the police have arrested Sunil Kashyap and Asib Farooqui under sections of extortion, and handed them over to the LT Marg police station for further investigation. Police said that since they appealed to the hawkers to lodge complaints against any such harassment, few from Mumbadevi who sell cutlery near Bhagat Tarachand Hotel approached alleging that the two accused come at the end of the day to collect money.

“They told that they forcibly extort Rs 80 to Rs 100 from every hawker and threaten with dire consequences. All hawkers pay them, and nobody dares to oppose as they are well organised,” said an officer. — Ahmed Ali
