Two held for fatal attack on councillor

MALAPPURAM

The police arrested two men in connection with last Tuesday night’s fatal attack on Manjeri municipal councillor Thalappil Jaleel alias Kunhan.

Kunhan suffered a serious head injury in the attack and he died on Wednesday evening at a private hospital at Perinthalmanna. A post-mortem held at the Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, found that his skull was shattered in the attack.

Those arrested were Shamseer, 32, from Pandikkad and Abdul Majid, 26, from Nellikkuthu. They were picked up by a police team led by Inspector C. Alavi. The police said they were on the trail of Shuhaib, the main accused.

The police said the accused had picked a quarrel with Kunhan and his friends over the issue of parking the latter’s car in a pocket road at Thamarassery near Payyanad, Manjeri.

The accused later followed Kunhan’s car on bikes and attacked it near a football turf at Nellikkuthu. Kunhan had got out of the car to see off one of his friends when the attack took place. The attackers escaped from the scene on their bikes.

Kunhan was Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)’s councillor from Payyanad. The attackers were also found to be IUML workers. The police said there was nothing political in the attack.

District Police Chief Sujit Das S. confirmed that it was an attack that followed a dispute over parking. Both the attackers and some men in the car were found to have been drunk.
